Responsible Gambling
Betting is entertainment that costs money, and for some people it stops being a choice. This page sets out who may gamble in South Africa, the tools a licensed site gives you, and where to turn if gambling has started to hurt.

Who may gamble here

In South Africa you must be 18 or over to gamble. Bookmakers are licensed by the provincial gambling boards — the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board issues most online bookmaker licences — and a licensed site verifies your age and identity under FICA before you can withdraw. An account opened with someone else's documents is closed.
Signs it has stopped being a game
- You bet money set aside for rent, food, school fees or a debt repayment.
- You bet to win back what you lost, and the stake grows each time.
- You borrow, sell things or hide what you spend from the people you live with.
- You cannot stop while a session is running, and you plan the next one during work.
- Sleep, mood or health has changed, and betting is the reason you can name.
One of these is a reason to set a limit. Two or more is a reason to stop and ask for help — not a character flaw and not something you have to solve alone.
Tools to look for in your account
- Deposit limit — a cap per day, week or month.
- Loss and wager limits — a ceiling on what a session may cost you.
- Session reminders — a clock on screen and a prompt after the time you set.
- Time-out — the account is locked for a set period, then reopens.
- Self-exclusion — the account closes for a fixed term or for good, and marketing stops with it.
If a site has none of this in its account settings, treat that as the answer to whether it deserves your deposit. Player protection is part of how we rate every operator we list.
Where to get help
- National Responsible Gambling Programme — 0800 006 008. A free and confidential counselling line, open around the clock, independent of this site and of every operator listed on it.
- South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF). Free, confidential treatment across the country, including face-to-face counselling with mental health professionals.
- The people you live with. The practical part of stopping is usually money in someone else's hands for a while, and that only works if they know.
More on recognising and treating a gambling problem is in our guide to gambling addiction. RSABet is a guide to betting sites, not a treatment service: we cannot advise on your case and we do not hold your account — but every page here carries the helpline, and this one exists so it is easy to find.
What the odds actually are
Every bookmaker builds a margin into its prices, and every casino game is built to pay back less than it takes over time. A slot with a 96% return to player keeps R4 of every R100 staked on average, across millions of spins. There is no system, staking plan or time of day that changes it.
That is not an argument against a R50 bet on a Soweto derby for the fun of it. It is the reason to decide the amount before you start, to treat a loss as the price of the entertainment, and never to chase it back.
