A South African buyer using cash faces three widely sold voucher brands at the till: 1Voucher, OTT Voucher and Blu Voucher. While all three convert physical rands into digital spending credits valid for up to 36 months, their rules on leftover balances differ sharply. 1Voucher issues a replacement change slip if you spend only part of your balance, OTT Voucher forfeits any unspent funds once its three-year window closes, and Blu Voucher requires you to redeem the entire amount in a single transaction.

How prepaid cash vouchers work across platforms

Using a voucher without linking a personal bank card relies on a simple mechanism. You pay cash at a till or purchase a digital token through an app, receiving a unique PIN.

According to 1Voucher's support documentation, each of its vouchers carries a 16-digit PIN that can be typed into an online checkout screen or shown to a cashier in store. OTT Voucher issues a PIN that provides instant account access once entered on a partner site. Blu Voucher operates through partner mobile applications and websites, allowing users to settle balances without entering card details. None of these systems charge a fee at the point of redemption, but how they treat unused balances sets them apart.

1Voucher: where to buy and what happens to leftovers

1Voucher offers a flexible mechanism for partial spending, provided you do not purchase through specific hardware. When a customer redeems less than the voucher’s total face value with a participating merchant, a change voucher is automatically issued to the buyer via SMS or generated on the partner’s platform. The single exception involves Flash machines, where partial redemptions are not possible.

Every 1Voucher PIN remains valid for 3 years from the date of purchase. Vouchers are non-refundable. According to 1Voucher support terms, a lost PIN cannot be recovered under any circumstances.

Availability spans formal retail chains, local merchants and digital banking channels:

  • In-store sellers: Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, OK Foods, House & Home, PEP and Flash traders
  • Digital channels: the 1Voucher website, the 1ForYou app, MTN MoMo, MoyaApp, TymeBank and Nedbank

Purchasing limits depend on the counter you visit. Figures published on 1Voucher's support page show that Flash merchants sell amounts ranging from R1 to R1 500. Pep and Ackermans sell fixed denominations from R20 to R200. Web purchases on the 1Voucher portal start from R50, while JD Group stores issue vouchers between R50 and R2 500.

OTT Voucher: wide denomination spread and strict expiry rules

When matching an exact deposit amount, OTT Voucher has the widest denomination range of the three. Its terms and conditions state that vouchers are available in denominations ranging from R5 to R5 000. The company’s official FAQ reports partnerships with over 430 000 retail stores and garages across the country.

Terms published by OTT Voucher specify that each code remains valid for 36 months from the date of issue, which is the date of first purchase. Once entered online, the PIN grants instant access to funds.

The financial restrictions are firm. Vouchers cannot be redeemed for cash and cannot be refunded unless required by law, including the Consumer Protection Act. If any balance remains on the voucher when the 36-month period ends, the remaining money is forfeited entirely. OTT Voucher terms state that expired balances cannot be reactivated, extended or refunded.

OTT warns that lost or stolen vouchers may not be recoverable. Once a user redeems a voucher, the transaction cannot be cancelled or reversed except where required by law.

Blu Voucher: simple full-value redemption

Blu Voucher takes an all-or-nothing approach to digital deposits. According to its FAQ, the voucher must be redeemed for its full value in a single transaction. Partial redemption is not allowed.

The voucher stays valid for 36 months from the date of purchase. There are no costs when redeeming the voucher, and it is generally not returnable after purchase.

Blu Voucher says it is sold at major retail stores, petrol stations, spaza shops, banking apps and digital platforms, and it is redeemed on partner apps or websites without a bank card.

Security carries one distinct procedural difference. While a lost 1Voucher PIN cannot be recovered and a lost OTT voucher may not be, Blu Voucher permits customers to report lost or stolen unredeemed vouchers for cancellation by calling 0800 014 942.

Practical tips before buying a prepaid voucher

Choosing between these three payment codes comes down to the exact deposit size, how you plan to spend it, and whether you might leave cash on the table.

If you need to pay with odd change or small sums below R20, Flash-issued 1Vouchers (from R1) or entry-level OTT Vouchers (from R5) fit best. For a single larger payment, OTT lists denominations up to R5 000, while the highest 1Voucher range on its support page is R2 500 at JD Group stores.

For split deposits, 1Voucher is the one of the three that clearly states it returns unspent value as a change voucher, provided you avoid Flash terminals; OTT's terms say its vouchers cannot be reloaded or combined. If you intend to use the entire voucher amount without splitting, Blu Voucher offers a straightforward route with a dedicated cancellation phone line if the unredeemed voucher goes missing. Always check which vouchers the betting site's cashier accepts before handing cash over at the counter. Betting is for adults aged 18 and over; if spending is getting out of hand, the National Responsible Gambling Programme helpline on 0800 006 008 is free.
