Telkom Knockout Fixtures 2019

The 2019 Telkom Knockout Cup returns to the elite of South African football after a brief stint in the FIFA international bubble. The annual competition that features soccer teams from the South African top division and the lower leagues is the second event where teams can grab some silverware this season. Baroka FC, having won the knockout competition last season, will look to successfully defend the title that, quite frankly, no one thought they would win last season. They visit SuperSport United, who are currently in a league position that makes them one of the favorites to strike a knockout victory, having just won a cup. The whole thing is quite absurd.

How the Telkom Knockout Draw Works

Last week saw the conducting of the Telkom Knockout draw for the 16 participating teams that make up the 2019-20 Absa Premiership. For the TKO draw, the PSL used three bowls. That first bowl was labeled Pot A and held the names of top-seeded teams that finished inside the top eight of the 2018-19 PSL season. The second bowl was labeled Pot B and held the names of teams that finished in the bottom half of the PSL table. The third bowl determined which team gets to play where.

A ball was drawn from Pot A by the PSL, and without opening it, placed it in an empty bowl of Pot B. Teams in Pot C were then placed in the same empty bowl, without being opened. After this, Pot B was filled with the first two teams that would give a home advantage to the first team and an away scenario for the second team.
