LeBron James Puts Off-the-Court Woes Out of His Mind

LeBron James has recently been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The guard for the LA Lakers is getting backlash for comments he made that were seen as controversial regarding the protests in China. As the run-in to the start of the 2019-20 National Basketball Association season took place, some NBA teams had been playing preseason games in China. The NBA preseason games, however, coincided with political unrest in the Asian country that forced sponsors to cancel scheduled events.

The basketball player was thrust into the middle of the tumult when he was requested to give his views on Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey’s message of support for the Hong Kong protestors. Given the relationship that generates billions of dollars between the NBA and China, Lebron James took the opportunity to comment on the apparent lack of nuance in Morey’s comments.

LeBron James Comments on China Human Rights Issue

King James stated that he "believes (Morey) wasn't educated on the situation at hand and he spoke,". The reaction was condemned on social media. Fans witnessed a squandered chance for perhaps the biggest NBA star to back the liberties of the Chinese people. Later, LeBron clarified his comments. He explained that his initial remarks were in reference to how Morey’s tweet created a potentially unsafe and hostile environment for his team during the two exhibition games they were slated to play in China.
